Agencies Extend Aid Application Deadline

Share

Home and business owners who suffered damage in the Jan. 17 earthquake have an extra 60 days to apply for disaster assistance, federal and state officials have announced.

With agencies receiving more than 1,600 assistance applications daily, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services decided to extend their filing deadlines until July 18.

The new date also applies to the Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program, but the agency’s economic injury loan program will still operate on an Oct. 17 deadline.

Overall, 550,761 people have applied for assistance since the Northridge quake, which caused billions of dollars in damage.

FEMA has already given out $782.7 million for disaster housing, and the Small Business Administration has provided $1.4 billion in loans. A state grant program has given $27.7 million to families and residents.

To register with FEMA, people should go to the Earthquake Service Center in Simi Valley or Fillmore in Ventura County. Or they may register by phone by calling (800) 462-9029.
