NO GUARANTEES: Cal State Fullerton’s baseball team, as expected, was picked early in the at-large selections for the NCAA tournament Monday. But Coach Augie Garrido is relieved at the selection--there are no guarantees. Three years ago, he told his team: “There are always some surprises each year.” He didn’t realize the surprise then was that the Titans, Big West co-champs that year, would be passed over. But Monday, the Titans (41-13) were assigned as the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Midwest I Regional at Stillwater, Okla. (C5).

ART OR POLLUTION? Artist Robbie Conal is under fire for his latest “guerrilla” poster binge in public places in Orange and Los Angeles counties. The posters poked fun at Sen. Robert Dole’s (R-Kan.) tearful eulogy at Richard Nixon’s funeral last month. . . . Now Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, a Republican, wants the police to fine Conal, calling his posters “visual pollution.” Conal’s response: The supervisor only objects “to public expression by people who don’t support his own obsolete position.”

MYSTIQUE RIDE: Surf’s up next week in Huntington Beach: “Endless Summer II,” the sequel to the 1964 surf-flick classic, will premiere there June 2. To celebrate, Natalie Kotsch, founder of the city’s International Surfing Museum, 411 Olive St., will set up a special movie-themed exhibit there--and repeat the original. She predicts big things for the sequel: “It will renew nationally the mystique of surfing.”

SURF SAFARI: Surfer Robert (Wingnut) Weaver, 28, is in the documentary-style movie, and has been traveling the country promoting it. So what does Weaver, a Newport Harbor High and Orange Coast College graduate, think the critics will say about his performance? . . . “What performance?” he says. “I surfed and had a good time, and I’m looking forward to a bunch of surfers seeing the movie and thinking I surfed well. That’s what it comes down to--the praise from your peers.”
