AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Ripken’s 300th Homer Helps Extend Brewer Skid

Cal Ripken hit his 300th career homer and drove in six runs Tuesday night as the Baltimore Orioles got 15 hits at Milwaukee and sent the Brewers to a club-record 13th consecutive loss, 13-5.

Ted Higuera (1-4) blew a 5-0 second-inning lead, surrendering home runs to Ripken and Jack Voigt in the third and to Chris Hoiles in the fourth. Leo Gomez later added two solo homers in his first multi-homer game.

Ripken hit a three-run double against reliever Jeff Bronkey in the fourth inning after Higuera walked the bases full. Ripken scored on the play when shortstop Jose Valentin threw the ball away.

Mark Eichhorn (1-1), who gave up four hits in 4 1/3 shutout innings, earned the victory in relief of Sid Fernandez.

Oakland 10, Seattle 1--Brent Gates went four for five and tied a team record with eight consecutive hits as the Athletics beat the Mariners at Oakland.

Mike Bordick doubled twice and tripled as the A’s won their second in a row.

Miguel Jimenez (1-2) won for the first time in five starts this season.

Gates, who went four for four Monday night, tied the club record of eight consecutive hits set in 1973 by Joe Rudi. The streak ended when Gates was called out on strikes in the seventh against former Oakland reliever Rich Gossage.

Cleveland 5, Boston 3--Jack Morris (3-4) gave up two unearned runs in seven innings to get his first road victory for the Indians and Albert Belle had a two-run single.

Aaron Sele (5-2) gave up five runs, eight hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Red Sox designated hitter Andre Dawson, who has had nine knee operations, suffered an injured left knee while running out a grounder and will undergo tests today.

New York 6, Toronto 1--Terry Mulholland pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game this season, and Wade Boggs and Jim Leyritz homered as the Yankees beat the Blue Jays in New York.

Mulholland (5-3) led the Yankees to their 13th victory in 16 games.

Dave Stewart (3-4) failed to reach the sixth inning for the fourth consecutive time.

Chicago 5, Minnesota 3--Joey Cora hit a go-ahead, two-run triple with two out in the seventh inning to lead the White Sox to victory in Chicago.

Warren Newson’s first home run of the season led off the seventh and made the score 3-3. Larry Casian (1-3) relieved Pat Mahomes, Lance Johnson singled, Mike LaValliere sacrificed and Tim Raines walked with two out. Cora followed with his drive into the right field corner.

Dennis Cook (2-0) got the victory. Jack McDowell, who hasn’t won since May 7, lasted 6 2/3 innings.

Texas 2, Kansas City 0--Kenny Rogers, despite being injured in a hotel mishap, pitched a six-hitter for his first career shutout as Texas stopped a four-game losing streak in Kansas City.

Rogers (5-3) took five stitches in his left knee when he slipped on an escalator at the team hotel on Monday night.

Jose Canseco hit his 10th home run in the first inning and Rusty Greer hit a leadoff triple in the fifth and scored on Jeff Frye’s infield out.
