El Toro High has hired University of the Pacific assistant Dave Shoemaker as its varsity basketball coach, the school announced Wednesday.

His first college coaching job was as an assistant at College of the Sequoias, which won the 1982 State community college championship.

Shoemaker replaces Tim Travers, who resigned April 1 after 14 seasons as the Charger coach. Travers had a 175-172 record at the school, including 22-6 in 1989-90 and 11-14 (3-10 in the South Coast League) last season.
