BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Injured Finger Puts DeShields on DL

Share

Since spring training Delino DeShields has suffered a broken cheekbone, had a concussion, had a 15-year old injury act up and and was hit in the face when a ball ricocheted off the plate while batting, but was still able to avoid the disabled list--until Saturday.

With his left-middle finger still severely sprained and cut from a head-first slide into home plate Wednesday night, DeShields was put on the 15-day list, retroactive to May 26.

It comes at a bad time for DeShields, who had snapped out of a slow offensive start and was batting .345 with 10 runs in his last 16 games. “It was just like before I got hit with the bat (in spring training) I said, ‘Reggie (Smith), I’m starting to feel good,’ then, bam,’ ” DeShields said. “(Jeff) Treadway is banged up too, so they need one guy playing.”

Dave Hansen was activated and second baseman Garey Ingram remained with the team. Treadway sprained his right wrist Wednesday night on a double-play attempt.

Though he is improved, Mike Piazza sat out his second consecutive game because of a sore neck and bruised left rib suffered in Wednesday night’s collision at home plate with Glenallen Hill, and remains day to day. Piazza has sat out two consecutive games only once before, April 8-9 of last season. . . . Darren Dreifort, whose pinch-hit in the 10th inning drove in the winning run Friday night, said that his first game-winning ball is more treasured than his first save. “Pitchers are supposed to get saves, they aren’t supposed to get game-winning hits,” Dreifort said. Dreifort said he was in the bullpen talking with the other relievers about who was going to pitch and hit when he got the call to get his gear and get to the on-deck circle. He ran all the way from the bullpen and straight on the field. “I can’t remember calling the bullpen for a hitter before, “ Manager Tom Lasorda said. “The last time I called in a pitcher to hit was Tim Leary in 1988 against the Giants, and he won the game for us.”
