Missing Schizophrenic Found With Relative

A 23-year-old retarded and schizophrenic man who wandered away from a school for the developmentally disabled was found in his grandmother’s care Saturday night, about 30 hours after he disappeared.

Police began searching for Willie Jonal Allen on Friday afternoon after he walked out of the Vista Day Treatment Center in the 14200 block of Roscoe Boulevard.

Allen’s disappearance prompted additional police patrols and door-to-door inquiries Saturday night. His caretakers were concerned because Allen did not have his medication to control bouts of schizophrenia and epilepsy.

Allen walked to the nearby home of his grandmother, who was unaware of the ongoing search. She took him to the Van Nuys Psychiatric Hospital for treatment, said Sgt. Jim Bilodeau of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“He was with his grandmother,” Bilodeau said. “He was never in danger.”
