A magnitude 3.7 aftershock of the Northridge quake rumbled through the Los Angeles metropolitan area Wednesday night, rattling china cupboards and startling thousands of residents but apparently causing no injuries or major damage.

The aftershock, which struck at 8:27 p.m., was centered about a mile southwest of the city of San Fernando, according to Caltech seismologist Riley Geary. The temblor was felt throughout the San Fernando Valley, in Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood and the Santa Monica and Venice areas.

Seismologists said there have been more than 8,000 substantial aftershocks of the devastating Jan. 17 quake.
