World Cup and Giants Stadium officials said they were doubtful the robbery reported Sunday by the Greek World Cup team actually happened.

Greece played Colombia at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and Greek Coach Alkis Panagoulias said $17,800 in cash and jewelry was stolen from the players’ hotel rooms after their keys were taken from the locker room at the stadium.

Panagoulias blamed stadium officials for the theft, but those officials said Wednesday that the incident had been an “inside job” and “staged.”

World Cup Chairman Alan Rothenberg was asked about his strong comments defending the security practices.

“I was angry,” Rothenberg said. “The locker room in the Meadowlands is absolutely secure. . . . I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if anything happened, frankly.”
