Clarke Takes Over Glendale Football Post

Ted Clarke, an assistant coach at Glendale College last season, has been named head coach at Glendale High, replacing Don Shoemaker, who resigned in May after six seasons.

Clarke, 36, served one season at Glendale College after working three years as an assistant at Citrus College.

In 1990, Shoemaker led Glendale to its only Pacific League championship. The Dynamiters were undefeated in 10 games before losing in the opening round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Leodes Van Buren pleaded innocent Thursday to a weapons charge, and a trial in Ventura County Superior Court was scheduled for July 25.

Van Buren, 18, an All-State football player from Newbury Park High, has been charged with firing a gunshot into his girlfriend’s Newbury Park home April 8.

Soccer

Granada Hills High soccer Coach Pete Mabie announced he will not coach next year because he is moving out of the area.

Mabie coached the Highlanders for the past two seasons. They won the Northwest Valley Conference title once and advanced to the City Section playoffs both years.

Mabie, an economics teacher, plans to move to Kansas City in August.

No new coach has been named.

The Valley United Wild Things, an area-based girls’ soccer team, has scheduled a soccer clinic for girls ages 7 to 14 on Saturday at Birmingham High from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30.

Tennis

Doubles partners Mike Bryan of Camarillo and Kevin Kim of Fullerton have advanced to today’s semifinals of a 16-and-under international tennis tournament in Toreno, Italy.

Bryan and Kim recorded victories over teams from Australia and Italy.

Miscellany

Seniors Marc Binda and Gina Punaro of Burroughs High have been selected Nike student athletes from among 500 high schools in Southern California.

Binda, who has a 4.47 grade-point average, was the goalie for the Burroughs soccer team and Punaro, who has a 3.65 GPA, was the captain of the basketball, volleyball and softball teams. She also ran track.

Kids Pass Sports, summer sports classes for boys and girls age 6-11, are scheduled for the Ventura Athletic Club starting June 20. Celebrity guest athletes will assist in instruction.

Sports include volleyball, hockey, baseball, basketball, racquet sports, football and rock climbing.
