The Mater Dei boys’ basketball team, led by Schea Cotton, a 6-foot-5 sophomore who was a member of The Times’ All-Orange County basketball team last season, will compete in six tournaments this summer.

The Monarchs, 33-1 last season in winning their third consecutive Southern Section title, play host to their tournament beginning June 22. They’ll also take part in the Surf City tournament July 1-3, the Nike-Mater Dei tournament July 6-10, the Great Western Shoot-Out July 11-15, the Las Vegas Nike Invitational July 16-22 and the BCI Tournament in Phoenix July 25-29.

Cotton will be joined by returning seniors Clay McKnight at guard and Shaun Jackson at forward. McKnight is the son of of the Monarchs’ coach, Gary McKnight, who has a career record of 352-29 at the school.

Junior Olujimi Mann and Santa Ana Valley will participate in the El Dorado and Cypress tournaments as well as the Mater Dei, Surf City and Nike-Mater Dei tournaments, where Mann could go face-to-face with his former Monarch teammates.

Mann, who transferred after his freshman season at Mater Dei, was The Times’ all-county first-team selection. He helped the Falcons (26-4) reach the Southern Section Division I-AA semifinals last season.

Edison (19-11), which gave Mater Dei a scare in the Southern Section I-A final before losing, 65-59, could get another crack at the Monarchs in the Surf City tournament. The Chargers, a senior-dominated squad last season, are also scheduled to play in the University tournament July 15-17.

Pacifica (30-2), which won the section III-A title and reached the State Division III final last season, appears to be in for a rebuilding year after losing the bulk of its players to graduation.

The Mariners, who will be led by guard Jaimi Bessho and forward Ed MacDonald, will get opportunities to regroup this summer in seven tournaments, beginning with Mater Dei’s.

The Brea-Olinda girls’ team, four-time defending State champions and the nation’s No. 1-ranked squad last season, plays host to a tournament beginning today.

The Ladycats (33-0) lost to graduation their top three players--Nicole Erickson, The Times’ county player of the year; Colleen Hudson and Sarah Beckley--and saw their coach, walk-on John Hattrup, quit May 31 after one season on the job.

But guard Kiyoko Miller and forward Lee Moulin lead a talented group of players for new coach Jeff Sink, the third-winningest girls’ coach in Alaska history at Fairbanks Lathrop, where his teams won state titles in 1990 and 1992.

The Woodbridge girls’ team (32-1), which won the section II-AA title and reached the State Division II championship game, will be without its floor leader, Jamie Oenning (UCLA), but she is all the young Warriors lose.

They’ll participate in the Estancia and Marina tournaments, where they could meet Melody Peterson and the Mater Dei Monarchs (24-5), who gained the section Division I-A final.
