WINDSOR SQUARE : Church Fire Fails to Stop Services

Share

A fire at the historic Wilshire United Methodist Church on June 6 caused about $120,000 in damage to the church’s second floor but has not prevented worship services and other ceremonies.

The weekend after the fire, a wedding and regular worship services were conducted as planned, said Robert Klein, the church’s administrator.

About 45 firefighters contained the fire in a hallway and a room in which equipment to run the church’s chimes was located, Klein said. The sanctuary was not affected by the fire, which originated in electrical wiring.

The church, designated by the city as a historic-cultural landmark, was built in 1927 at Wilshire and Plymouth boulevards. Some members of the church have been attending services there since it opened its doors, Klein said.

Until the fire, the church’s chimes rang three times a day. “It will be quiet for a couple of months now,” Klein said.
