Jeff Trovatten has been named head football coach at St. Genevieve High. Trovatten, 40, replaces Richard Fong, the 1993 Times Valley football coach of the year, who left St. Genevieve after last season to take an assistant coaching position at Crespi.

Trovatten, who was an assistant softball coach at College of the Canyons last year, headed the Hart junior varsity football team in 1991 and 1992, compiling a 15-5 record and winning one Foothill League title. He was also an assistant junior varsity football coach at Hart for two seasons.

Trovatten inherits a team that went 9-3 last season and was unbeaten in Camino Real League play.

Chris Beck, a right-handed pitcher from The Master’s, has signed with the Seattle Mariners and will be assigned to the Mariners’ short-season Class-A team in Bellingham, Wash., he said Saturday. Beck, the Mariners’ seventh-round pick in the draft earlier this month, was 5-7 in his senior year with the Mustangs this season.

Adam West, a left-handed pitcher out of Thousand Oaks High and Pierce College, has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and will play for the Cardinals’ team in the rookie-level Arizona League.

West, who was drafted in the 30th round, will simply move from Scottsdale, Ariz., where he was playing for the Scottsdale Braves in the Arizona Collegiate League, to Chandler, Ariz., site of the Cardinals’ affiliate. West, who was 10-4 with a 2.95 earned-run average for the Brahmas in 1994, opted to sign rather than accept a scholarship to University of the Pacific.

Cardinal scout Chuck Fick, who signed Tighe Curran last year, has now signed both left-handers from the Newbury Oaks American Legion team that he coached to the World Series title in 1992.

“When I first became a scout, I said it would be nice if I could sign my two best left-handers,” Fick said. “It’s a dream for me. If I could see them pitching in the big leagues in five years, it’d be a great story.”
