LOS ANGELES : $25,000 Rewards Offered in Venice-Area Killings
The Los Angeles City Council has posted $25,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects in each of three gang-related killings in the Venice area.
Between Jan. 1 and June 6, nine such killings took place in Mar Vista and Venice’s Oakwood neighborhood. Los Angeles police have solved six cases.
“These murders have caused an otherwise peaceful and beautiful community to live in fear of walking the streets or allowing children to play outside,” Venice-area Councilwoman Ruth Galanter stated in her motion.
The Los Angeles Police Department ties the killings to the Westside’s bloodiest gang war in a decade. The 10-month-long conflict involves black and Latino gangs in Venice and Culver City.
According to Galanter, police need help in apprehending the suspects in the fatal shootings of Paul Medina on Feb. 14, Manuel Hernandez on April 10 and Harold McDaniel on April 24.
Medina’s body was discovered in his van parked in an Oakwood alley. He had been shot in the head. Hernandez was shot at the Mar Vista housing project outside his apartment in the early morning. Two weeks later, McDaniel was killed in his car on Lincoln Boulevard.
