CYPRESS : Swap Meet Clears Its Last Hurdle

The City Council has approved the redesign of an awning for a forthcoming new swap meet at Los Alamitos Race Course.

City Manager Darrell Essex said the council’s approval means that the swap meet has now cleared all governmental hurdles.

“The canopy for the food concession was the only thing remaining before the council,” Essex said. “Now everything has city approval, and the swap meet is scheduled to open July 9.”

The council on June 13 approved most of the design plans for the swap meet’s food concessions and restrooms. But the council balked at the design for an awning, or canopy, over the food concession. The original design was for something like a circus tent, with peaks and pennants.

Councilwoman Joyce C. Nicholson said the original design had too much of a “carnival atmosphere.”

And Mayor Richard Partin jokingly had accused the canopy designer of trying to copy the famous twin peaks at Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby track in Louisville.

The new design, approved at a special meeting Monday, looks “more like a regular canopy,” Essex said.
