Byrne said Dang and Nguyen had been at a party earlier in the evening and were on their way home when they noticed that they were being followed by another car. The Camry pulled along side and opened fire.

After the shooting, Dang drove Nguyen to the Garden Grove police station, where Dang knocked on a window to get the attention of officers.
