A field of five will probably be entered this morning for the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on Saturday.

Trainer Bobby Frankel has decided Fanmore will make his main track debut in the 1 1/4-mile Gold Cup, joining The Wicked North, Arcangues, Del Mar Dennis and Slew Of Damascus in the race, which will be televised nationally by ESPN.

The 6-year-old Lear Fan gelding will be ridden by Corey Nakatani, and Gary Stevens will replace Nakatani on Slew Of Damascus.

Third in the Californian behind The Wicked North and Kingdom Found, Slew Of Damascus was scheduled to arrive at Hollywood Park early this morning.

“We were really happy with his work (five furlongs in 1:00 Tuesday morning at Bay Meadows), and all systems are go,” said trainer Craig Roberts. “We took the bar shoe off his (right front) foot about three days before the work. We wanted to make sure he was comfortable before we asked him to do anything stressful on the foot.”

Del Mar Dennis, who disappointed in the Californian after winning the Mervyn LeRoy, worked a half-mile in 47 3/5 Wednesday morning.

“He’s been working every five days and galloping a mile to a mile and a half on the days when he doesn’t work, and he’s still put on 10 pounds since his last race (June 5),” said trainer Paco Gonzalez. “He’s coming up to this race very good, and he’s going to run well.”

On his way to his first victory in his ninth start, heavily-favored Boldtopic pulled himself up in the final sixteenth of a mile of Wednesday’s second race.

A three-length lead vanished and three others in the field of $32,000 maidens--Family Law, Ballazzi and Freeze Police--passed him nearing the wire.

Kent Desormeaux got the 3-year-old Bold Tropic gelding going again, and somehow Boldtopic was able to get up and beat Family Law in a photo.

However, the stewards ruled that he was guilty of interfering with Freeze Police and disqualified him, placing the 1-2 favorite fourth.

There was some solace for owner Blane Schvaneveldt, the quarter horse trainer, and trainer Henry Dominguez. Boldtopic was claimed by trainer Charles Pinnell for $32,000.

Hollywood Park’s American Handicap will be the final race in the National Best Seven on Monday.

The other six races in the series, which is being run on the holiday as opposed to its usual Saturday, are the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park, the Ft. McHenry Handicap at Laurel, the Molly Pitcher at Monmouth Park, the Stars & Stripes Handicap at Arlington, the Americana Handicap at Calder and the Independence Handicap at Louisiana Downs.

Grand Flotilla, the upset winner of the Hollywood Turf Handicap, will make his next start July 24 in the $250,000 Sunset Handicap.

The 7-year-old had been under consideration for the American Handicap, but trainer Jenine Sahadi decided to wait for the longer Sunset.

“I’m not sure the 1 1/8 miles (of the American) is his best distance and it looks like the race is going to come up pretty tough,” said Sahadi. Grand Flotilla worked seven furlongs in 1:28 4/5 last Sunday.
