The Daily Telegraph in London has noted that England’s non-participation in the World Cup finals “has had a surprisingly beneficial effect on the betting industry, where a $75-million play is expected by the end of the tournament.”

At William Hill (betting shops), where they anticipate an $18-million share of the action, spokesman Graham Sharpe said: “I think this World Cup has seen football betting come of age. . . .

“Because England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not there, betters don’t need to worry about other loyalties when they put on their bets.
