Belgians were sad and bitter about their team’s exit from the World Cup after its 3-2 defeat by the Germans on Saturday. Chief among their complaints is the non-call by referee Kurt Roethlisberger when Germany’s Thomas Helmer took down Josip Weber in the penalty area.

From Page 1 of the Walloon daily “La Derniere Heure” (The Last Hour), under the headline “Red card for the referee”:

“Switzerland was famous for its banks and its chocolate. Now, she will also be famous due to a certain Kurt Roethlisberger, international referee, who distinguished himself on Saturday by refusing (Belgium) a penalty for an unmistakable foul by Helmer on Josip Weber.”
