WORLD CUP USA ‘94: ROUND OF 16 : Spotlight : WORSE THAN IT LOOKED

The view from the field did not show how seriously Tab Ramos was injured during Monday’s 1-0 loss to Brazil. Players and coaches saw Ramos elbowed in the head by Brazil’s Leonardo and fall to the ground, but they couldn’t gauge the extent of his injury.

Ramos was taken from the field semi-conscious, and U.S. Coach Bora Milutinovic asked him at halftime if he was ready to play.

Ramos’ childhood friend, John Harkes, said he watched the replay and only then fully understood the visciousness of the blow.

“Literally, I almost got sick,” Harkes said. “His legs kicked out from under him. It’s a sad way to go out of the World Cup.”
