The Sun in London reported its switchboard lit up when British TV commentator Kevin Keegan, a star for Liverpool and England as a player and now manager of the Newcastle club, said of the elbowing of Ramos: “It didn’t look like such a bad challenge to me.”

As Ramos was carried off on a stretcher and Leonardo shown a red card, Keegan added: “It didn’t look like he did that much wrong to me. Maybe it’s my eyes.

“I’m disappointed to see Leonardo, who I considered to be the best player in the World Cup, going off for one moment of madness.”

His view was greatly in the minority. One typical caller to The Sun declared: “That’s not the sort of comment we expect from an ambassador of the game.”
