BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Groin Pull Puts Marlins’ Harvey on DL
Florida Marlin closer Bryan Harvey, bothered by a pulled right groin, was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 30. . . . The Red Sox activated second baseman Tim Naehring from the disabled list and sent pitcher Nate Minchey to Pawtucket of the International League. Naehring was batting .287 in 174 at-bats when he went on the disabled list June 10 with a sprained right ankle. . . . Bob Watson, general manager of the Houston Astros, underwent successful surgery for removal of his cancerous prostate gland at a St. Louis hospital. Watson, 48, was expected to remain hospitalized for five days before returning to Houston. . . .
Baseball players declined to make contract proposals to owners and said their executive board might not set a strike deadline when it meets Monday. Because players are fearful owners will unilaterally impose a salary cap after the season, the union is considering a walk out in August or September. . . . Chicago Cub broadcaster Harry Caray was expected to be released today from a Chicago hospital, where he underwent heart tests and observation after collapsing June 23 at Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium.
