Dutch goalkeeper Ed de Goey is glad to see the attention soccer is getting in the United States, thanks to the World Cup.

“Now, the people are just starting to learn it, and maybe in a couple of years they will be more into it,” he said. “Americans have to learn a lot about the sport. However, they seem really anxious to learn. The commentators on the game are growing (in knowledge) and doing much better than when we first came.”

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
