FULLERTON : Housing Project Gets $1.77-Million Grant

Share

The City Council, acting in its capacity as the Redevelopment Agency, this week unanimously approved a $1.77-million grant to help fund a senior citizen housing project that will be completed in September.

The grant will not be delivered until after the four-story complex is built. In exchange for the grant, developers Douglas B. Chaffee and his mother, Margaret N. Chaffee, agreed to keep the rents for the 59-unit apartment building below market value for up to 99 years.

“Anything we can do to help elderly people, I definitely support,” Councilwoman Julie Sa said.

People 62 years old and older who earn less than $22,000 a year will be eligible to live in the building, called Klimpel Manor Apartments. It has a steel frame and a concrete parking structure. The project is on Amerige Avenue between Pomona Avenue and Lemon Street. Developers said rents there will range from $382 to $499 a month.

Council members said the project is needed and will enhance the downtown area.

“It’s going to be an asset to the community,” Mayor A. B. (Buck) Catlin said.

Developers said they already have more than 59 people on a waiting list.
