Bob Lohr confirmed the obvious in Friday’s second round of the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic.

“That 61 was a tough act to follow,” Lohr said after shooting a three-under-par 68 to maintain a three-shot edge in the $1.1-million event at Williamsburg, Va.

While Lohr’s four-birdie, one-bogey effort paled in comparison to his opening-round gem, it was good enough to establish a 36-hole record for the tournament on Kingsmill Golf Club’s 6,797-yard layout. Lohr was at 13-under 129, one shot better than Ian Baker-Finch and Mike Donald were at the midway point of the 1991 event.

Glen Day, a PGA Tour rookie, also shot a 68 and is second at 132. Then it’s two more strokes to John Wilson, who shot a 70.

Tom Purtzer was at 135 after a 69, and the group at six-under 136 included 1987 Anheuser-Busch champion Mark McCumber, 1984 winner Ronnie Black and rookie Justin Leonard. All three shot 69s.

Kermit Zarley shot a seven-under-par 64, to take a one-stroke lead over DeWitt Weaver in the first round of the Kroger Senior Classic at Mason, Ohio.

The Golf Course at Kings Island played to the advantage of the big hitters after a week of rain.

Nineteen players, including defending champion Simon Hobday, had to sit out a 39-minute rain delay before they could finish. Soft greens helped 29 of the 79 players in the field break par.

Tom Shaw, Rocky Thompson and Jim Colbert were another stroke back at 66, and Bob Smith, Graham Marsh, Charles Coody and Larry Gilbert were at 67.
