Weather played a big role in the Italy-Spain game. When the game began at noon, the sky was totally overcast, there was barely a breath of wind and the humidity was officially listed at 100%. By early in the second half, both teams were exhausted and Italy’s coach, Arrigo Sacchi, even admitted that, while his game plan was to go all out for 90 minutes, his team just couldn’t and was thoroughly outplayed after halftime by Spain.

About an hour after the game, the clouds lifted, the sun broke through and a light wind began breathing some life into the Foxboro area that had been, for Spain and Italy and 54,605 fans, a three-hour oven.
