In the “They’ll do anything to make a dollar department,” organizers of the New York/New Jersey World Cup venue are holding a public sod sale after Wednesday’s semifinal at the Meadowlands.

The Bermuda Turfgrass field will be removed from Giants Stadium after the Italy-Bulgaria semifinal, so why not sell it? The sale begins at 6 a.m. Thursday. About 80,000 square feet of official World Cup turf will be available.

Alan Rothenberg, chairman of World Cup ‘94, said in a statement there is no better way of showing “our appreciation than to offer something special from the World Cup that the fans will cherish for a lifetime.”

Because proceeds from the sale will be donated to the U.S. Soccer Federation Foundation, it will also benefit Rothenberg, USSF president.

The sod is going for $10 to $20 per square foot. Minimum orders of one square foot are $20. Call (201) 460-4144 or (201) 804-2871.
