WORLD CUP USA ‘94: SEMIFINALS : Spotlight : THE RIGHT TOUCH

Perhaps Swedish forward-midfielder Henrik Larsson had the best approach when it came time for his turn during the high drama of Sunday’s penalty kicks at Stanford Stadium.

“I didn’t think so much,” he said.

Larsson was the final Swedish player to kick against Romanian goalkeeper Florin Prunea. His kick gave Sweden a 5-4 advantage and the victory when Romania’s Midorag Belodedici couldn’t score on his attempt.

“I decided which corner I should put it in, then I looked at the goalkeeper,” Larsson said. “He was going the other way, and then I put it in the goal. I would kick it hard if he was going in the same direction, loosely if he was going the other.”
