Barry Bonds hit two home runs and Darryl Strawberry homered for the second consecutive game to lead the surging San Francisco Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Montreal Expos on Friday night at Montreal.

“We’re back to the same combination we had last year with Will (Clark), only more powerful,” Bonds said. “Hopefully, we can get ourselves going.”

Mark Portugal (8-6) gave up eight hits in seven innings for the Giants, who are 6-0 since Strawberry joined the team.

San Diego 3-2, New York 7-1--Tony Gwynn and Phil Plantier hit back-to-back home runs in the 14th inning against Mike Maddux to give the Padres a doubleheader split at New York.

The homers ended the four-hour, 10-minute nightcap that began as a pitching dual between Andy Benes and Bret Saberhagen, both the subject of trade speculation. Benes worked the first eight innings and struck out a career-high 14. Saberhagen pitched 10 innings and struck out 11.

With the game scoreless with one out in the 14th, Gwynn hit his 10th homer against Maddux (1-1), followed by Plantier’s 18th.

In the first game, Bobby Bonilla went three for four, including a three-run home run, in support of Bobby Jones (10-7).

Pirates 11, Houston 8--Carlos Garcia homered and drove in four runs and the Pirates staged one of the greatest comebacks in their 107-year history, rallying from eight runs down at Pittsburgh.

Ravelo Manzanillo (3-2), batting only because Pittsburgh was running out of reserves, hit a game-tying two-run double in the fifth and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings as the Pirates overcame a seven-run Houston first inning.

Atlanta 6, Florida 4--Rookies Javier Lopez and Jose Oliva each hit home runs and drove in two runs at Atlanta.

Tom Glavine (11-7) gave up five hits, didn’t walk any and struck out three in seven innings as the Braves ended a two-game losing streak.

Cincinnati 7, Chicago 1--Reggie Sanders homered into the upper deck at Cincinnati to highlight a five-run third inning as Jose Rijo (9-4) struck out five and gave up eight hits over seven innings.

Sanders’ 15th home run capped the Reds’ third, when Cincinnati sent 10 batters to the plate against Willie Banks (8-8).

Colorado 10, St. Louis 6--Charlie Hayes had four hits, including two triples, as the Rockies battered Bob Tewksbury (10-8) for seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings at Denver.

Mike Kingery and Eric Young each drove in two runs for Colorado, which chased Tewksbury in the fifth inning as Hayes tripled and scored on Kingery’s single. Kingery scored on third baseman Todd Zeile’s error, and Nelson Liriano’s sacrifice fly gave the Rockies an 8-1 lead.
