A 43-year-old Pomona man remained in critical condition Monday after being shot in the face during a home robbery while he watched the World Cup soccer final on television Sunday.

Police said three suspects were arrested and are believed to be members of an Asian gang. Officers said the victim, whose name was not released, also is Asian, as are the people who were with him at the house in the 1000 block of South Waters Avenue.

Several men, women and children were watching the game when the robbers entered the home, said Pomona Police Lt. Rick Mackey.

One of the people in the house retrieved a shotgun and in a tussle it discharged, hitting suspect Rathana Phung, 19, of Santa Ana, police said. One of the other suspects allegedly shot the 43-year-old man in the face at point-blank range with a handgun. Police said they were investigating who shot the man.

Suspects Map Eam, 20, of Long Beach, and a 16-year-old boy from Downey took Phung to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, where they were arrested.

All three were booked on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police were uncertain whether the suspects knew the victims and were investigating whether rival gang members were in the house during the attack.
