Killer of 7 in CSUF Rampage Denied Mental Hospital Release
A former janitor who shot and killed seven people in a 1976 rampage in the library at Cal State Fullerton was denied release from a state psychiatric hospital by a judge Tuesday.
Superior Court Judge James Jackman denied a petition by Edward Charles Allaway to have his treatment program declared unconstitutional.
But the judge ordered officials at Atascadero State Hospital to develop a new treatment program for Allaway, who was found innocent of the murders by reason of insanity.
The ruling culminated a five-day hearing that began July 12. That was 18 years to the day that Allaway shot nine people at close range in a rampage that still ranks as Orange County’s worst mass murder.
The judge ruled that Allaway’s treatment is inadequate, but refused to release him to the community or a less-restrictive facility.
The former Baptist Sunday school teacher said he was driven insane by homosexual activity in the library bathroom he cleaned, as well as by taunts from co-workers that his ex-wife appeared in pornographic movies. No such movies were made.
