Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Van Nuys man who allegedly beat his 74-year-old mother repeatedly in her Palmdale home during a dispute over money, authorities said Thursday.

Deputies responded Wednesday night to a report that an assault was taking place in a home in the 2500 block of Olive Drive. When deputies arrived, they found the mother, Jeanne Canfield, with numerous bruises and a nine-inch cut on her right forearm.

The woman told deputies that her son, Mark Canfield, 42, who had left the house, had been beating her the past three days because of a disagreement over money.

Jeanne Canfield was taken to Palmdale Hospital Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Shortly after the woman reported the beatings, sheriff’s deputies arrested Mark Canfield in the 37000 block of 25th Street. He was jailed at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Antelope Valley Station in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Sheriff’s Detective Barbara Fryer said the son remained in custody Thursday on suspicion of felony battery. He may face an additional charge of elder abuse, which carries a penalty of up to four years in prison, she said.

Mark Canfield is expected to be arraigned today in Antelope Municipal Court.
