Raider quarterbacks dominated a five-drive controlled scrimmage at Oxnard.

Working against the second-team defense, starter Jeff Hostetler completed seven of nine passes for 94 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown pass to reserve tight end Kevin Smith. In his only drive, Hostetler completed three passes for 22 yards to wide receiver Tim Brown and two passes for 29 yards to tight end Andrew Glover.

Backup Vince Evans completed seven of eight passes for 63 yards and led the second-unit offense to a 47-yard field goal by Jeff Jaeger in two drives against the first-team defense. Rocket Ismail caught three passes from Evans for 20 yards. Daryl Hobbs and Tom Rathman each caught two passes.

Third-teamer Billy Joe Hobert had two incompletions in his first three attempts but showed his mobility with a 36-yard scramble. He then finished with three consecutive completions, including a 36-yarder to John Morton and a six-yard touchdown to Joe Kralik.

While the passing game completed 18 of 23 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns, the running game struggled in a scrimmage format that signaled a ballcarrier tackled once he was touched by a defender. Running backs Tyrone Montgomery, Harvey Williams and Calvin Jones combined for 14 yards in nine carries.

“For the most part, the (scrimmage) was pretty good,” Coach Art Shell said. “The key thing is for each individual to grow and become better. Then, as we get close to the season, for us to come together as a whole.”

Defensively, the Raiders had several players stand out, including rookie linebacker James Folston, drafted out of Northeast Louisiana in the second round, who had one sack against the first-team offense.

The Raiders will not practice today and will leave for Barcelona on Monday morning to prepare for an exhibition against the Denver Broncos July 31.
