Wangila Napunyi, a 1988 Olympic boxing gold medalist from Kenya, remained in critical condition in Las Vegas with a head injury suffered during a fight.
Napunyi was fighting David Gonzales of Houston in a scheduled 10-round welterweight match Friday night at the Aladdin Hotel when the referee stopped the bout, won by Gonzales. Napunyi later collapsed in his dressing room.
Albert Capanna, who performed surgery on Napunyi at University Medical Center, said “He is not getting any better. . . . It doesn’t look really good. That doesn’t mean it can’t get better.”
