IRVINE : Fund Set Up for Boy Injured in Collision

Share

A fund has been established for a 7-year-old boy who was critically injured July 11 when a stolen Mercedes slammed into his family’s station wagon at an Irvine intersection.

Trent McGee remains hospitalized but is slowly recovering from his injuries, family friends said.

The fund will help the McGee family pay medical bills.

Police said the driver of the Mercedes, John Eric Phelps, a 31-year-old Dana Point resident, broadsided the McGee car at the intersection of Jeffrey Road and Irvine Center Drive.

The force of the crash pushed the station wagon against a traffic median. Trent’s mother, Cheryl McGee, and his 10-year-old sister were not hurt, but Trent suffered severe head injuries.

Police said Phelps sped through three red lights before hitting the McGee car. Phelps was arrested and charged with suspicion of felony hit-and-run, evading arrest, grand theft auto and reckless driving.

The fund was set up at Great Western Bank, 3978 Barranca Parkway, Irvine 92714. The account number is 1841854192.
