WITHOUT A CLUE: Last week’s decision by the Rams to release running back Russell White still puzzles his former Crespi High coach, Bill Redell. Redell, who coached White in the late 1980s, can’t figure out why he didn’t get more playing time last year. . . . “There must be more to this,” Redell said, “because he certainly has the ability to play in the NFL.”

NEW WORLD: After shaking hands with Yasser Arafat last year, it may not seem such a shock for Israel to make peace with a longtime enemy. But Rabbi Harold Schulweis of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino says this week’s meeting between Israel’s Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan’s King Hussein (A6) is still a big event. . . “No one five years ago would have dreamed this,” he said.

NO SURRENDER: Jaime Barajas (above) serves pretty well on the court, and even better on the streets. Barajas, who played tennis at CSUN and still competes in local tournaments, is a patrol officer with the LAPD. He spends a lot of time looking for victims of child abuse. . . He’s conquered many tough opponents, but none tougher than cancer (C8).

MIGHTY CASTING: Hundreds in their teens and 20s crammed into Burbank on Monday to save the Earth from evil. And who said Generation X doesn’t stand for anything? Well, actually, they showed up to audition for “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” the TV show about teen-age superheroes (F1). . . . It’s still too early to judge the fate of the planet, but the casting call did cause a minor traffic jam.

BOOK IT: Work is moving fast on major repairs needed to reopen CSUN’s Oviatt Library by late August (B3). . . . Earthquake damage to the library, which opened in 1973, actually could have been worse. Only a handful of books were ruined, and just several thousand of the 1.1 million need rebinding. “The collection was preserved quite well,” said Doug Davis, associate dean of the library.
