YORBA LINDA : 6 Take Out Papers for Council Races

Share

Six potential candidates, including two former city council members, have obtained nomination papers for November’s City Council election.

Candidates will compete for two seats.

Incumbent John M. Gullixson, whose term expires this year, is among the group that has already picked up candidacy papers. Councilman Henry W. Wedaa, whose term also expires this year, has not taken out papers and is not expected to run.

Former councilmen Gene Wisner and Anton (Doug) Groot have obtained nomination papers. Wisner was appointed to the council in 1983 for one year. He was then elected from 1984 to 1992. Wisner did not run for reelection in 1992 because he supports a limit of two consecutive terms.

Wisner said he would like to serve as a conciliator on a council recently plagued by animosity.

Other residents who have picked up candidacy papers are Todd Tande, Brett Barbre and Christopher Hively. Tande, 35, is a county fiscal analyst. The others could not be reached for comment.

The filing period for nomination papers ends Aug. 12. If Wedaa does not pick up and return nomination papers, the filing period will be extended until Aug. 17.

Wedaa promised not to run for reelection if members of the League of California Cities agreed to keep him on as chairman of the Air Quality Management District until his council term expires in December.

Wedaa had come under fire by some cities for stridently enforcing AQMD regulations. In a compromise, he retained his spot on the AQMD in exchange for his pledge not to seek reelection.
