Inmate Has Seizure, Dies in County Jail
A 37-year-old drug suspect died Sunday after suffering a seizure in the Orange County Jail, authorities said.
Albert Arzate Hernandez, who had been in custody since June 10, was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana shortly after 8:30 a.m., when his cellmate summoned jail authorities, sheriff’s Lt. Dan Martini said. It was the first reported death at the jail this year.
Hernandez was being held on suspicion of possession of a syringe and on warrants for grand theft and parole violation, police said.
Martini said Hernandez apparently suffered a seizure and fell to the floor, possibly striking his head on the toilet as he fell. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
The district attorney’s office will conduct an investigation into the death, Martini said.
