BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : No Rest for Weary--Mariners, That Is

How did the Seattle Mariners spend their off-day on Monday in the middle of their 32-day, 30-game trip, which could be the longest since the Cleveland Spiders’ 52-day trip in 1899?

7 a.m. CDT: Leave Chicago hotel and take a bus to Midway Airport.

8:45 a.m.: Wait for flight, which is 45 minutes late, and then take 1-hour 45-minute flight to Utica, N.Y.

10:30 p.m: Arrive in Utica, and take 1-hour 30-minute bus ride to Cooperstown, N.Y.

1 p.m. EDT: Arrive at local gym to change for Hall of Fame game.

2 p.m.: Game.

5 p.m.: Depart for 1 1/2-hour bus ride.

6:30 p.m.: Depart for plane.

7:45 p.m. Land in Cleveland for refueling because Utica runway is too small.

8:15 p.m.: Airborne once again.

9:45 p.m. PDT: Land at Ontario airport.

10:30 p.m.: Arrive at team hotel.

Total travel time: 17 hours 30 minutes spanning 3,530 miles, covering six cities, four states, three flights and four bus trips.

“It was . . . that we had to play in that . . . game,” Mariner right fielder Jay Buhner said. “That was the one opportunity we could have gone home and spent time with our families, take care of business, and they make us do that. . . .

“Man, what a miserable . . . day.”

Angel shortstop Gary DiSarcina’s alert play Sunday against the Texas Rangers, when he noticed that Will Clark missed second base on his way to third, caused quite a disturbance.

Juan Gonzalez apparently became irate when he realized that Clark’s mistake cost him a hit and began throwing a tantrum in the dugout. Before anyone knew it, Gonzalez and pitcher Kevin Brown began shoving, which was witnessed by several Angels.

“I kept looking over,” DiSarcina said, “it got pretty interesting in there. Jose (Canseco) kind of broke things up.”

Torey Lovullo, the Angel infielder who was released this spring, was recalled from triple-A Calgary and joined the Mariners for the game. He replaced 19-year-old shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who was batting .204 with six errors in only 17 games. Rodriguez, 19, was the youngest player in the majors. . . . Angel right fielder Tim Salmon is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list today. Rookie outfielder Garret Anderson is expected to be sent back to triple-A Vancouver.
