WESTCHESTER : Interchange Opens 6 Months Ahead of Schedule
The Howard Hughes Parkway interchange on the San Diego (405) Freeway has opened, providing Westchester commuters direct access to the freeway’s northbound lanes.
The $15-million ramp, inaugurated last week by public figures including Gayle Wilson, wife of Gov. Pete Wilson, had been under construction for two years and was completed six months ahead of schedule.
The project was built by Caltrans with funds from the Summa Corp. real estate company, which developed the Howard Hughes Center office park adjacent to the interchange. The interchange allows commuters to bypass the busy Centinela Avenue interchange in Culver City and was designed to alleviate traffic congestion from the business center.
“The ramp was privately funded, and that was really wonderful,” said Caltrans spokeswoman Pat Reed. “Because of limited funding, public/private partnership building is the quickest way of getting projects done.”
