PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : This Negative Is a Positive

Share

Coach Art Shell’s report card after the Raiders’ 27-19 exhibition victory over Dallas on Sunday included several good grades, but what pleased him the most was the negative X-ray on defensive tackle Chester McGlockton’s left leg.

In the first quarter, McGlockton was kicked in the leg that was broken in last season’s playoff victory over Denver. He did not return to Sunday’s game and was nervous about being examined.

“Yeah, he didn’t want to go for X-rays because of what happened to him before,” Shell said at the team’s training camp in Oxnard. “He’d rather test it on the field than to find out he had broken it again from X-rays.”

For fellow defensive lineman Willie Broughton, the news was not as good. Broughton will sit out for a month because of a dislocated elbow.

Greg Skrepenak, who started at right offensive tackle in place of injured Bruce Wilkerson, played three quarters against the Cowboys and despite being beat by Tony Tolbert for a safety, received a good report from Shell.

Other players praised by Shell included rookie linebackers Rob Fredrickson and Rob Holmberg, along with second-year linebacker Greg Biekert and defensive end Scott Davis.

The player Shell said had made great strides toward making the team, however, was defensive end Alberto White, who had two sacks and an interception.

“Being consistent is important but you have to make plays to get people’s attention,” Shell said. “He’s had a good camp and has done good things when he’s been on the field in games. He’s letting his play on the field do his talking for him.”
