NOTEBOOK / KIRBY LEE : Paramount Golfer Wins Junior Title

Randall Hunt of Paramount won the boys’ 15-17 division of the Inner-City Junior Golf championships Saturday at the Chester Washington course.

Hunt, 15, won a two-hole playoff after firing a two-day total of 153 in the event sponsored by American Golf Corp. and Western States Golf Assn.

The victory qualifies the Valley Christian High sophomore for this weekend’s Junior National championships in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Four-time Olympic gold medalist John Naber will speak tonight at the 12th annual celebration of the Long Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.

Naber, who was elected to the U.S. Olympic Committee Hall of Fame in 1984, won gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke, 800-meter freestyle relay, 400-meter medley relay and 200-meter backstroke at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

The celebration, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will include a reception and dinner. Cost is $50.

Cameron Ewing, 15, of Cerritos participated in the Holland Cup in Amsterdam and Yorkshire Cup in London as part of the East-West Ambassadors soccer program.

Ewing, a junior at Whitney High, was the youngest player on the Ambassador boys’ 19-and-under team.

The SoCal boys’ club of Tustin and girls’ teams from the City of Commerce won five of the six age-group titles in the National Junior Olympic Water Polo national championships Saturday at Cal State Long Beach.

SoCal swept all three boys’ divisions, defeating Cerritos, 14-1, Santa Barbara, 4-2, and Annapolis, 8-6, to win the age 13-, 15- and 17-and-under titles. Commerce defeated Saddleback-El Toro, 9-7, and Annapolis, 17-4, in the age 13- and 17-and-under championships.

Saddleback-El Toro beat Los Alamitos-Long Beach, 7-4, for the girls’ 15-and-under title. One-hundred fifty-one teams from 68 clubs competed in the weeklong tournament.
