Edberg Starts Fast but Is Upset by Corretja

Stefan Edberg, describing his play as lethargic, was upset Friday by unseeded Alex Corretja of Spain at the RCA Championships in Indianapolis, leaving only one seeded player in the semifinals.

Edberg lost, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, to Corretja, who upset Jim Courier earlier in the week. No. 7 Wayne Ferreira of South Africa is the only seeded player left.

Top-seeded Steffi Graf won the final 11 games to defeat Gabriela Sabatini, 7-5, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the Matinee International tournament in Montreal.

Second-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-2, 6-1. She will meet Kimiko Date of Japan in today’s semifinals. Date defeated Nathalie Baudone of Italy, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Graf will face Mary Pierce, who advanced past Judith Wiesner of Austria, 6-1, 6-1.

No. 7 Marc Rosset upset second-seeded Andrei Medvedev, the defending champion, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), in the Volvo International at New Haven, Conn. In other quarterfinal matches, top-seeded Michael Stich of Germany beat Patrick Rafter of Australia, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, and third-seeded Boris Becker beat No. 11 MaliVai Washington, 6-2, 6-4. Stich will play countryman Becker in the semifinals. Rosset will play the winner of the match between No. 6 Yevgeny Kafelnikov and unseeded Marc Goellner, which was suspended because of rain until today.

NHL

Guy Carbonneau, the outspoken and controversial captain of the Montreal Canadiens, was traded to the St. Louis Blues for rookie center Jim Montgomery. Carbonneau, 34, had been with Montreal since being drafted in 1979. He led the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup title in 1993 against the Kings.

International Sports

Linford Christie of Great Britain won another 100-meter race, beating Dennis Mitchell at the Van Damme Memorial track meet in Brussels, but Russian Irina Privalova’s winning streak in the women’s event was ended by Gwen Torrence.

Christie won in 10.03 seconds with a slow start because of wet conditions. He ran away from the field in the last 50 meters.

In the women’s 100, Torrence ran the second-best time of the season in 10.83 seconds, easily defeating Merlene Ottey of Jamaica.

Alma Ata, Kazakhstan, failed to the meet the deadline for submitting formal applications to host the 2002 Winter Olympics, leaving nine candidates, including Salt Lake City, left.

Basketball

The Sacramento Kings renounced their rights to free agent Wayman Tisdale and signed journeyman forward-center Frank Brickowski. Brickowski, 35, averaged 13 points and five rebounds last season for the Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets. Terms of his contract were not released.

The NBA disapproved a contract between the Chicago Bulls and Toni Kukoc, charging it violates the league’s salary-cap rules. Last year, Kukoc signed an eight-year contract with the Bulls that called for a first-year salary of $1.1 million, the most the team could pay under the salary cap. After exercising a one-year opt-out clause this summer, Kukoc re-signed with the Bulls for six years at an average of $4.1 million.

Forward Robert Horry of the Houston Rockets escaped serious injury when his car collided with a tractor-trailer and struck a tree, Houston police said.

Kris Johnson, a UCLA basketball recruit and son of former Bruin All-American Marques Johnson, underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove torn cartilage from his left knee. Gerald Finerman, the Bruins’ team physician, said Johnson should be at full strength when the Bruins open practice on Oct. 15.

Melisa Moses of Orange Park, Fla., edged two-time U.S. champion Carrie Zarse of Rockford, Ill., by less than a point to win the women’s one-meter springboard competition in the Phillips 66 National Diving Championships at Moultrie, Ga.

A male American Airlines flight attendant is suing the airline and the Dallas Cowboys for sex discrimination against male attendants. The suit says male flight attendants are not allowed to work on flights chartered by the football team, according to his lawyer.

A team from the Pomona-Pitzer women’s swim team set the record for crossing the Catalina Channel--about 21 miles from Palos Verdes to Catalina--in 8 hours 27.12 minutes. The swimmers were Lesley Pelton, Judy Van Atta, Heather Royer, Erin Moore, Pam Reece and Camille Paton.

Mike Kochel, 78, one of Fordham’s “Seven Blocks of Granite” football players in the 1930s, died of natural causes in Bellevue, Neb.
