RAM NOTEBOOK : Raiders Make Things Tough at Corners--Again

TIMES STAFF WRITER

With a battered Rams’ defensive line unable to get any pressure on Raider quarterback Jeff Hostetler, it was another rough night for starting cornerbacks Todd Lyght and Steve Israel.

Lyght was beaten three times by the Raiders’ Daryl Hobbs, who had third-down catches of 24 and 11 yards on two scoring drives in the first half of the Raiders’ 29-20 exhibition victory at Anaheim Stadium. Lyght had been beaten for three touchdowns in the Rams’ first two exhibition losses, to Green Bay and New England.

Israel, who has been battling a sore thigh muscle in training camp, was beaten for a 25-yard touchdown catch by tight end Andrew Glover in the second quarter.

Israel also was called for consecutive penalties--pass interference while covering Alexander Wright and for grabbing Harvey Williams’ face mask on a tackle--to help set up the Raiders’ second touchdown.

New weapon: Starting tight end Troy Drayton, who had not caught a ball in the first two exhibition games, caught two for 12 yards in the first half against the Raiders. He also caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Chris Chandler in the third quarter.

*

Test market: The Rams were supposed to test the new audibilizer that links the quarterback to the sidelines as part of a demonstration for league officials. But the speakers weren’t loud enough, so it went unused.

*

Brawl ball: The Anaheim Stadium security crew got a workout Saturday night. Security officers handled at least four brawls among fans, including a first-half scrap in the north end zone, where fans threw beer and soda on each other, then traded punches.

Another fan ran out on the field during the two-minute warning in the second quarter. He laid down at the seven-yard line, put his hands behind his back and waited for security officers to arrive.

Ram Notes

Former Raider Jessie Hester, a free-agent trying to make the Rams’ roster, caught three passes for 59 yards, including a 45-yard reception on the Rams’ first drive. . . . Flipper Anderson led the Rams with six catches for 55 yards.
