VAN NUYS : Cement Truck Flips Over on Freeway

Share

A cement truck overturned Wednesday morning on the northbound side of the Golden State Freeway, spilling wet cement and blocking traffic in the three right lanes for about 2 1/2 hours but causing no serious injuries.

The accident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. as John Davis Walter, a 26-year-old driving trainee from Van Nuys, was heading north under the guidance of instructor David Cabezas, 37, of Sunland.

California Highway Patrol Officer Refugio Pinedo said, according to the men, the steering wheel began shaking after the truck passed Sherman Way. Cabezas panicked, grabbed the steering wheel and told Walter to break, Pinedo said. Walter then lost control of the truck, hit the concrete barrier to the right of the freeway and flipped over, spilling about almost half of the truck’s load.
