OUTLOOK

Costa Mesa reached a Southern Section championship game last year with only 21 players, and the Mustangs will face similar prospects this year. But Miller has shown he can win with only a handful of players, and like last year’s team, this one is athletic. Reeves is a lot like Crenshaw and Chatman, and Miller says he has four players who are in the 4.6-second 40-yard dash range. Like Crenshaw and Chatman, Weir was named All-Southern Section. Crenshaw averaged 7.9 yards per carry and scored eight touchdowns in the regular season. He was also a defensive terror. The problem is that the team is small, with only one player over 240 pounds (Weir), and seven players are going both ways--Crenshaw, Chatman, Weir, Reeves, Taylor, Herzog and Morin. A couple of injuries could really wreak havoc. However, if a team is going to be small in size and numbers and still contend for the league title, this is the league to do it in.
