Buena led area Southern Section teams with 3,565 yards rushing last year, but 89% of them came from graduated players George Keiaho and Johnny Chang.

OUTLOOK

Buena finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Channel League last year and made the Southern Section Division III semifinals, but the Bulldogs may be only the third best team in the league this season, behind Ventura and Santa Barbara. Carr was the starting quarterback last year, passing for 838 yards, but Scott may move him to running back and put Dudley at quarterback. “We are going to experiment,” Scott said. “We are going to have to try to figure a way to score other than giving it to Keiaho.”

FAST FACT

Hueneme is 2-48 in the past five seasons.

OUTLOOK

The Vikings’ defense was the problem last season. They gave up 426.6 yards per game--117 more than Oxnard, the next worst team in the league. One of the keys to an improved defense is Vainuku, who has received interest from several Pacific 10 Conference schools. Hueneme’s offense should benefit from the return of Jones at quarterback.

OXNARD YELLOWJACKETS

1993 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 3-7 1-6 7th

FAST FACT

Quarterback Lewis ran for 433 yards and passed for 736 last season.

OUTLOOK

Oxnard will be one of the few teams in the league to throw the ball much this season. Although Kazmierczak calls his offense a run-and-shoot, he said he plans to run the ball about half the time. The Yellowjackets strength will be returning players in the offensive backfield, specifically Lewis. A weakness will be the defensive line. Oxnard will need to improve its entire defense to crack the playoffs.

RIO MESA SPARTANS

1993 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 4-6 4-3 4th

COACH YR. RECORD AT SCHOOL George Contreras 1st 0-0

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Steve Arneson, 6-0, 200 QB LB Sr. Rashod Rose, 5-9, 170 RB -- Sr. Brian Lombardi, 5-9, 165 RB -- Sr. Chuck Inglis, 6-0, 220 OL LB Sr. Robert Buenrostro, 5-11, 185 TE LB Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Ismael Lopez, 5-11, 185 -- DL So. Richard Almanza, 5-11, 225 OL DL So. Farhaad Azimi, 6-1, 185 QB LB So. Courtney Palmore, 5-10, 170 RB DB So.

FAST FACT

Rio Mesa’s freshman team was 9-0 last season.

OUTLOOK

The Spartans will have as many as six sophomores starting from last year’s league championship freshman team. Only three starters return, the best of which is Rose, who transferred from North Carolina last season. Contreras said Rose could gain 1,000 yards, no easy task in the Delaware Wing T, in which four backs will split the carries. The Spartans hope to confuse opponents enough to sneak into the playoffs.

VENTURA COUGARS

1993 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 8-3 6-1 Tied 1st

COACH YR. RECORD AT SCHOOL Phil McCune 10th 28-61

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Erik Olson, 6-1, 190 QB -- Sr. Ramsey Jay, 6-2, 170 WR -- Sr. Aaron Davis, 5-7, 170 RB -- Sr. Chadd Kahlsdorf, 6-4, 290 OL -- Sr. Hasira Sutton, 6-5, 225 OL -- Sr. Jason Sims, 6-3, 190 TE DL Sr. Matt Williams, 6-1, 180 OL DL Sr. Fernando Guerrero, 5-10, 225 -- LB Sr. Brian Harris, 5-10, 180 -- LB Sr. Cody Green, 6-0, 190 -- DL Sr. Chris Ryan, 6-0, 190 -- DL Sr.

FAST FACT

Jay ran a personal best of 47.49 seconds and finished fourth in the 400 meters in the state track meet last June.

OUTLOOK

Ventura and Santa Barbara are the co-favorites in the league because of their speed. Jay, Olson and Davis are the quickest for the Cougars. Davis rushed for more than 500 yards in his first five games last year, before he was injured. Olson passed for 727 yards and ran for 712 and 16 touchdowns last season. Ventura plays host to Santa Barbara on Nov. 4, and that game will likely determine the champion.
