TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR Anson Beck, 6-2, 220 OL -- Sr. Trevor Fulks, 6-2, 260 -- DL So.

FAST FACT

Carlos Baker had seven interceptions last season, all in the first four weeks because quarterbacks stopped throwing his way.

OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs have five two-way starters who provide a strong nucleus for the newcomers--provided they can last four quarters. They must get the ball into the hands of Baker and Lucas. Hazelton is excited about community support, but is worried about the depth and character of his 1994 club. “I want a team that believes it can win every time it walks on the field,” he said. “I don’t think a (league championship) is out of the question, ever.”

FAST FACT

Burroughs went from 0-10 in 1992 to 5-6 last season and played in the playoffs.

OUTLOOK

The Indians have their third coach in as many seasons and continue to be a team in transition. The roster consists of 30 players, six or seven of whom will play both ways. Pass protection is a concern. Big seasons are needed from Knoop and Moreno. Boldvich passed for 843 yards with only one touchdown last year and nearly transferred to Hart over the summer. Now he might play wide receiver, with Barrett taking over at quarterback.

OUTLOOK

Mohr hopes his first season at the helm is not a lonely one. Gone is former coach Harry Welch, his old mentor, and running backs Ed Williams and Freddy Polito, who combined for 27 touchdowns and nearly 1,800 yards rushing. Other key players have left the program, along with Brian Biales, the heir apparent to Sean Connelly at quarterback. Division I prospect Mark Manskar returns to the offense line.

HART INDIANS

FAST FACT

In each of the past nine seasons Hart’s quarterback has been selected to the All-Southern Section team.

OUTLOOK

Hart has won 15 consecutive league games dating to 1990 when it lost to Schurr, 42-35, with three weeks left in the season. The Indians figure to continue the streak. Only seven starters return, but the offensive line is big and dominant, the rushing attack proven and the run-and-shoot passing scheme spearheaded by junior Steve McKeon, who knows the system. On defense, pass rush is a concern but the linebacking and backfield will be strong.

SAUGUS CENTURIONS

Mark Pecaro, 5-11, 172 RB LB So. Peter Hilton, 5-9, 175 C -- Jr. John Bowman, 5-10, 168 -- DL Sr.

FAST FACT

Bowman had to order extra helmets last week, when 66 players reported. It marked the biggest turnout of his tenure.

OUTLOOK

The consensus around the league is that Saugus will challenge Hart for the league title. Six starters return on both offense and defense--and Bowman doesn’t use players both ways. Three offensive linemen are back, including team-leader Cherry.
