FAST FACT

Canoga Park draws from a campus with the fewest students (1,400) in the conference.

OUTLOOK

With just three starters returning from a team that won only two games, earning a playoff berth will be virtually impossible in this conference. The lack of experience and team speed are “glaring weaknesses,” according to Lugo.

FAST FACT

Reseda had scored in double figures every week last season and was averaging 23 points a game going into the 3-A semifinal against San Pedro, which blanked Reseda, 17-0.

OUTLOOK

Reseda, which returns to the Valley Pac-8 Conference after a four-year absence, promises to be the second- or third-best team in the conference. On paper, the Regents feature one of the better lines in the conference, which will help, considering Schaeffer’s vow to pass more this season. “I think we’re gonna be able to throw and run the option a little more,” Schaeffer said. If history means anything, Reseda has the best shot at upsetting Sylmar. Reseda has beaten the Spartans the last three times they met on the field in 1987, ’88 and ’89.

SYLMAR SPARTANS

FAST FACT

Sylmar, a four-time defending league champion, has won 32 consecutive league games since losing to Reseda, 20-6, in 1989.

OUTLOOK

No surprise here. Sylmar is the team to beat. The Spartans have accumulated seven transfers since last season, five of which were starters for their former teams. Marquez, who started at Saugus last year, is giving returning quarterback Lopez a battle for the starting spot. Sweet, a former Kennedy defender, bolsters an already extremely talented and deep corp of linebackers. Price, who averaged more than 10 yards in 50 carries behind Tyrone Crenshaw (Michigan State), will be tough to catch. With quick acceleration and a low center of gravity, Price is among the best runners in the region.

VAN NUYS WOLVES

1993 OVERALL LEAGUE PLACE 8-3 6-1 2nd

COACH YR. RECORD AT SCHOOL George Engbrecht 3rd 16-8

TOP RETURNEES OFF DEF YR Larry Reed, 6-0, 180 TB DB Sr. Chris Byfield, 5-10, 160 QB -- Sr. Anthony Patricio, 6-3, 285 OL DL Sr. Mauricio Pinto, 5-11, 310 C -- Sr. Duke Kim, 6-1, 220 OL LB Jr. Chris Rowe, 6-2, 215 FB LB Jr. Mario Luna, 5-11, 255 OL DL Jr. Kelly Wang, 6-2, 225 OL LB Jr. Allan Viden, 5-11, 175 -- DB Sr.

TOP NEWCOMERS OFF DEF YR John McPherson, 6-0, 180 TB LB Jr. Damien Boudreaux, 6-1, 175 WR DB Sr. Frederico Arroyo, 6-1, 185 WR -- Sr. Laurent Corson, 5-11, 180 TE LB Sr. Roe Rojas, 6-0, 220 -- LB Jr.

FAST FACT

In just two seasons, Engbrecht has guided the Wolves to 16 victories. Prior to Engbrecht’s tenure, Van Nuys had won only 18 games in five seasons.

OUTLOOK

Van Nuys has three returning offensive linemen and boasts one of the most experienced and bulky fronts in the conference. Additionally, Engbrecht said he is two deep on the offensive line depth chart. Reaping the benefits of that line will be Reed, who rushed for 1,000 yards last season, and Byfield, who completed nearly 60% of his passes for 1,147 yards and nine touchdowns. Engbrecht has about as much confidence in his offense as he does skepticism in his defense. So, his goal each week will remain a constant: “Score more points than the other team.”
