OUTLOOK

The Antelopes lose plenty from last year’s Division I semifinal team, but two of their best players return. Lewis rushed for 1,612 yards (sixth-best in the area) and 19 touchdowns in 1993. Shrout averaged 46.9 yards a punt and is a preseason All-American according to several publications. “He’s the first guy we’ve ever had whose gotten interest from schools east of the Mississippi,” Newcomb said. Smith, a returning All-League selection, leads a defense which allowed only 10 points a game in league.

FAST FACT

Carr’s father, George, played five years as a wide receiver and defensive back with Calgary of the Canadian Football League.

OUTLOOK

The Bulldogs return 33 lettermen from a team that didn’t win a game on the field last season (Antelope Valley forfeited it’s victory over Highland for using an ineligible player). Parker has made several changes for 1994, especially the offensive attack, which switches from the I-formation to a one-back passing attack. Two talented transfers should make an immediate impact. Marcy (Fresno Edison) will start at running back and Hollingsworth (Rancho Buena Vista in San Diego) will lead the defense.

FAST FACT

The Lobos return nine starters on defense from 1993, including the entire line.

OUTLOOK

Experienced lines and the explosive Bailey are strengths for the Lobos. Bailey returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown against Quartz Hill last season and gained 93 yards in 20 carries in limited action at running back. For additional help, Bauer has turned to other sports. Drossel was Golden League high hurdles champion and Spradlin won a league title in wrestling. “We’ve got enough talent where we can think about getting back to the playoffs,” Bauer said.

FAST FACT

The Falcons played 50 summer passing league games to give a group of receivers, including three sophomores, needed experience.

OUTLOOK

The Falcons are young and deep. With 51 players on the roster, Palmdale has 20 more players than a year ago. Paez returns after a one-year absence to take over a wide-open attack which produced 2,730 passing yards last year. “We’re still going to throw a lot and throw all over the field,” Williams said.

FAST FACT

The Rebels return six starters from an offense which averaged 37.3 points a game.

OUTLOOK Either Kendrid or Woodworth will have the unenviable task of replacing Golden League offensive player of the year Brad Norris, who passed for 2,691 yards and 24 touchdowns. Kendrid, an option specialist, and Woodworth, a drop-back passer, will both play in preseason games before Albee settles on a starter for the league season. Pereira was Golden League defensive player of the year and Adranga was an all-league selection.
