PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Harrison Limps After Workout

Share

The Rams released wide receiver Todd Kinchen because they couldn’t keep him healthy, signed former Falcon wide receiver Tony Harrison to their practice squad as a replacement, and after one workout he began limping.

“What happened, and this is amazing: He woke up and he had this pain in the hip,” Ram Coach Chuck Knox said.

“He ran well out here (Wednesday), in fact, he was impressive for the first workout. Obviously we gave him a physical prior (to signing him) and he was fine.”

Harrison, who was limping badly, left after practice to undergo medical examination.

After all the trouble the Rams have gone through to win permission for cornerback Darryl Henley to play for them, Knox won’t say if he will.

Henley has been cleared to join the team in Atlanta and Knox has watched him practice without problem the past two days, but he acted Thursday as if he were protecting some sort of Pentagon secret.

“We’ll make a decision on who our 45 players will be on Sunday an hour and 15 minutes before the ballgame,” Knox said.

The Rams continue to practice with defensive end Fred Stokes on the sideline and linebacker Henry Rolling in the lineup.

Stokes is healthy, but the Rams are concerned about their depth at defensive end and like Rolling’s ability to rush the passer.

Running back Jerome Bettis passed out T-shirts to all offensive linemen Thursday reading: “2,000 yards or bust.”

Asked if he’s prepared to recall the shirts and scratch out 2,000 in favor of 1,000 after gaining only 52 yards in the opener, Bettis laughed. “If we win 10 games,” he said, “I’ve done my job.”

Advised, however, that he will need more than 700 carries--at the rate he’s going--to gain 2,000 yards, the easy-going Bettis mockingly yelled, “I can do that. Coach . . . “
